YORKNITE 2025 - annual migration of Swiss Air Force's Hornet for Nightflying
Like every year in mid-November, our Hornets migrates to the north for regular nightflying exercises above the training areas of the north sea. It began with Sweden and Norge, since a couple of years it's now in the UK Yorkshire area with the RAF Leeming as host.

Like every year, the Swiss Air Force is announcing the flight schedules. Not many Airshows planned in Switzerland for 2025, but a day araund an air base is also interesting. It will become more difficult when the new aircrafts arrive I fear ...

No Axalp Live Firing Demonstration in 2024 and 2025
Swiss Air Force has cancelled already the very popular Axalp Airshows for 2024 and 2025.
It's not like Swiss Armed Forces have an very restricted budget, but it looks that political and military leaders made multiple commands on new gear without looking on the financial part. Different commands have now to be paid in multiple parts and 2-3 years later than expected.

F/A-18C accident at the Susten Pass in 2016: charges filed
Bern, March 31, 2023 - The military justice auditor has brought charges against an air traffic controller at Skyguide AG and against a pilot from the Swiss Air Force. The pilot of an F/A-18 C Hornet was killed in the 2016 aviation accident (J-5022) in the Susten Pass region.
Flugunfall am Sustenpass von 2016: Anklage erhoben
Bern, 31.03.2023 - Der Auditor der Militärjustiz hat gegen einen Flugverkehrsleiter der Skyguide AG und gegen einen Piloten der Schweizer Luftwaffe Anklage erhoben. Beim Flugunfall in der Region Sustenpass von 2016 kam der Pilot einer F/A-18 C Hornet ums Leben.
Am 29. August 2016 kollidierte eine F/A-18 C Hornet der Schweizer Luftwaffe mit der westlichen Bergflanke des Hinter Tierberg in der Region Sustenpass. Der Pilot kam dabei ums Leben. Das Flugzeug wurde durch den heftigen Aufprall vollständig zerstört.
Der Kommandant der Luftwaffe erteilte der Militärjustiz am 29. August 2016 den Auftrag, eine vorläufige Beweisaufnahme durchzuführen. Diese diente dazu, den Sachverhalt abzuklären und festzustellen, ob allenfalls die Voraussetzungen für eine Voruntersuchung gegeben sind. Wie die Untersuchungsrichter in ihrem Schlussbericht festhalten, ereignete sich der Unfall im Rahmen eines Kampfflugtrainings. Kurz nach dem Start der Zweierpatrouille auf dem Militärflugplatz Meiringen wollte der später verunfallte Pilot seinen Radar auf das Flugzeug des vorausfliegenden Piloten (Leader) aufschalten, damit er ihm mit seinem Radar folgen konnte. Dies misslang jedoch. In der Folge nahm der später verunfallte Pilot Kontakt mit dem Flugverkehrsleiter von Meiringen auf, um weitere Instruktion zu erhalten. Dieser gab ihm die Anweisung, auf eine Flughöhe von 10'000 Fuss (3'048 m) zu steigen. Der Pilot führte die Anweisungen des Flugverkehrsleiters aus. 58 Sekunden nach diesem letzten Funkverkehr kollidierte der Pilot auf einer Höhe von 3'319 m ü. M. ca. 11 Meter unterhalb des Grats des Hinter Tierbergs mit der Westflanke des Bergs.
Der Flugverkehrsleiter und der Pilot sind der fahrlässigen Tötung (Art. 120 MStG), der fahrlässigen Nichtbefolgung von Dienstvorschriften (Art. 72 Abs. 2 MStG), der fahrlässigen Störung des öffentlichen Verkehrs (Art. 169a Ziff. 1 MStG) und des fahrlässigen Missbrauchs und Verschleuderung von Material (Art. 73 Ziff. 1 Abs. 1 MStG) angeklagt.
FĂĽr die Angeklagten gilt weiterhin die Unschuldsvermutung.

April 2020 publizierte die Kommunikation Militärjustiz einen Zwischenbericht sowie einen ausführlichen Medienrohstoff über die Ergebnisse der vorläufigen Beweisaufnahme des militärischen Untersuchungsrichters zum Flugunfall vom 29. August 2016. Dieser Text gibt den Stand der Untersuchungen von März 2020 wieder. Er umfasst die Ergebnisse der vorläufigen Beweisaufnahme, jedoch nicht der Voruntersuchung, die erst nach der Publikation des Medienrohstoffs durchgeführt wurde. Dieser Text kann deshalb in Einzelheiten von den Ergebnissen der Voruntersuchung abweichen.

Payerne closed for runway works, like every summer. June 2nd 'till July 3rd, 2020
Like every year the military airfields in switzerland closes down for some weeks for maintenance works on runway and installations.
The main base Payerne will be closed from June 2nd 'till July 3rd, 2020.
QRA/Air Defence (LPD24) from 0600-2200h LT will be executed out of Meiringen during this time, together with nearly all flights with F-18 Hornet.

Evaluation NKF - Mission Super Hornet
The second candidate will arrive this week and includes an Omega Company Tanker as support. The test flights will start next monday april 29th and end on Mai 3rd. Eight missions are scheduled, with a total of 17 takeoffs and landings (PAY/MEI).
As support aircraft an KDC-10 Tanker aircraft is expected (N974VV, Mc Donnell Douglas DC-10-40) - due Air'04 Airshow an KC707 of the Omega company was here.

Evaluation NKF - Mission Eurofighter Typhoon
As first of the candidates for the new fighter aircraft in Switzerland, two RAF Typhoons landed in Payerne today. For the following days eight missions are scheduled, with a total of 17 takeoffs and landings (PAY/MEI). Flight days are in between11th 'till 17th of April, with a nightflight mission next monday.

Eurofighter Typhoon T3
Registration: ZK303 / AX (cn 207/BT017/ISPA5)
Spotter-/Mediaday of april 12th - no Eurofighter flights in the morning. Takeoff in the afternoon 1515, landing 1615h local time. Beware of the Hornet Display training at 1330h.

Flight Schedule of the Swiss Air Force 2019
PAYERNE LSMP
Main events will be the Air Policy CAP's for the World Economic Forum (WEF) Davos, the evaluation of the new fighter jets in summer and the week long visit of the French Air Force (Armée de l'Air, AdlA) end of August.
MEIRINGEN LSMP
A lot of Tiger activity throughout the year, but mostly only two aircrafts. PC-21 training out of Meiringen in spring and a very surprising event not yet ready for publication. The fighter aircrafts in evaluation for the NKF out of Payerne are also visiting Meiringen due there stay in Switzerland. For the Spottergroup at the Basevisits please contact me via flugzeugforum.de - Username Grimmi. Some places are still available at the moment.
EMMEN LSME
Main events are the Patrouille Suisse training week, the Hornet flights in August and some cargo aircrafts for Air Force (US Navy Herc's 'stealing' our F-5 Tiger aircrafts) and the RUAG, mainly Antonov AN-124.

Summer break in Payerne
A month earlier then other years, the Swiss Air Force is flying out of Emmen for a month. Meiringen and Payerne are closed down for Runway repairs and/or touristic reasons.
