Super Constellation HB-RSC - Season 2018 cancelled

Bad news from the Super Constellation Flyers - the aircraft will not be ready for flights in 2018 (see also the blog-entry from April'18). Maintenance is still needed. SWISS airline provides an hangar 'till August'18 minimum, so the maintenance can work indoors.

News from the hangar 

Maintenance tasks are progressing well on the Super Constellation. Unfortunately, both systems and structural repairs are more complex and time consuming than originally anticipated. This means that sadly, the «Star of Switzerland» will not be flying again this year as the aircraft will not be ready in time for the required test and check flights to be accomplished before the end of the summer.

However, after talks with FOCA representatives as well as receiving positive feedback following previous inspections, we are confident that upon completion of the required maintenance tasks, we will have many successful flying seasons to look forward to! 

Thanks to a generous offer by Swiss Airlines, our «Connie» will have a hangar spot until the end of August 2018. This will allow us to continue focusing on necessary repairs without causing delays by having to move the aircraft frequently.

The last hours saw quite a lot of bad news in military aviation with deadly crash of one of the solo pilots of the Thunderbirds (see below) and an F-15K of the Republic of South Korea Air Force (RoKAF) missing in the country's rural south. Thuesday saw two other crashes with an CH-53E Super Stallion and an AV-8B Harrier of the US Marines.

Thunderbirds Aircraft Mishap
NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. - A U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds pilot was killed when his F-16 Fighting Falcon crashed over the Nevada Test and Training Range today at approximately 10:30 a.m. during a routine aerial demonstration training flight. The identity of the pilot is being withheld for 24-hours pending next of kin notification. An investigation is being conducted into the cause of the mishap.The team's participation at the March Air Reserve Base "The March Field Air & Space Expo" has been cancelled. It is unknown how this accident will impact the remainder of the 2018 Thunderbirds Season.

Much better news in Europe, with the Super Constellation HB-RSC in big maintenance work now. After the cancellation of the flights last year mainly due the new build of 24 wing flap link rods and damages due fire - see on my blog - the Super Constellation Flyers announced seeing the light on the horizon, with end of revision planned this summer. The aircraft will be completly revised and only regular maintenance work to be done the following (many !) years:

Technische Probleme verhinderten im vergangenen Jahr eine interessante Flugsaison mit unserer Super Constellation.
Die Absage der Flugsaison 2017 haben wir dann zum Anlass genommen, zusammen mit Fachleuten und dem BAZL, unsere «Star of Switzerland» auf Herz und Nieren zu checken. Dabei haben wir feststellen müssen, dass wir rund zwei Millionen Franken benötigen, um unsere Super Connie wieder in die Luft zu bekommen. Viel Geld und Zuversicht waren also nötig. Im Herbst 2017 standen die vom Vorstand aufgestellten Ampeln auf «grün» und wir haben dem SCFA Association Assembly im November die Weiterführung unseres Projektes beantragt.
Nachdem unsere Besitzer dem Antrag des Vorstandes zugestimmt hatten, erhielten wir von Connie-begeisterten Donatoren und Spender*innen genügend Geld und von der SWISS einen fixen Hangarplatz für sechs Monate. Somit konnten die dringend anstehenden Arbeiten am Flugzeug endlich in Angriff genommen werden.
Doch auch 2018 wird kein normales Flugjahr, denn die technischen Herausforderungen sind immer noch enorm. Aber dank unseren Spezialisten für die Instandstellungs- und Wartungsarbeiten an unserer «Grand Old Lady» werden wir es schaffen! Zwar steht noch kein Datum fest, wann die Connie wieder abheben wird. Die derzeitige Planung aber sieht vor, dass wir im Laufe des Sommers 2018 die vom Luftamt geforderten Testflüge absolvieren und das Flugtraining mit den Piloten und Flight-Engineers durchführen können. Danach sind endlich wieder Flüge mit Ihnen geplant.
Nicht nur Sie, auch der Vorstand ist ungeduldig und sähe es gern, wenn alle Arbeiten am Flugzeug schneller erledigt würden. Doch die geplanten Kontrollen und Revisionen fördern immer wieder kleinere und grössere «Findings» zu Tage, die uns den Takt vorgeben. Und gerade weil unsere Spezialisten so akribisch vorgehen sind wir überzeugt, dass nach Abschluss all dieser Arbeiten unsere L-1049 Super Constellation «HB-RSC» in einem derart guten Zustand sein wird, dass nicht immer wieder neue Überraschungen auf uns zukommen werden. Ein normaler, standardisierter Wartungsablauf wird dann die Regel sein und unsere jährlichen Maintenance-Kosten merklich senken.
Dann wird uns das Bundesamt (BAZL) auch das ersehnte «Permit to fly» ausstellen und die «Star of Switzerland» noch viele Jahre am europäischen Himmel zu sehen sein. Zur Freude unserer Supporter, Associate Members und vielen flugbegeisterten Aviatikfans!
